Today, at 14h30, Bart gave a presentation for TEDxMaastricht. In 8 minutes he showed several interesting topics related to disease transmitting mosquitoes. Two of these are innovations that In2Care is working on. One topic illustrates a novel method for the detection of mosquito breeding sites and the second topic previews a novel way of targetting mosquitoes. Interested …………………….

Fungus-coated nets against mosquito-borne diseases

We have received an innovation grant from an organisation who wishes to remain anonymous.

For this project we are developing a first-line house screen product based on a unique coating with fungus spores that can effectively kill mosquitoes. Fungi are promising novel (biological) mosquito control agents that can complement existing mosquito-borne disease interventions. Added benefit from fungus infection is that it counteracts resistance as a late life killing agent and it makes insecticide resistant mosquitoes susceptible for insecticides once more.

A Dutch series for children has made some recordings about how mosquitoes find humans by smell. The show will air on the Dutch national channel NED3 at 18h15.

Remco had the opportunity to explain a little bit on the olfactory system of the malaria mosquito and how one can measure what a mosquito can detect. He shows the electrophysiology setup he used for his PhD research and also showed the 3-layer olfactometer used for behavioural experiments.

Biogents has kindly provided In2Care with a very nice and healthy batch of Aedes aegypti eggs to start-up a colony of our own.

Biogents is an innovative company on the forefront of mosquito control research. One focus of Biogents is the development and production of patented and highly effective mosquito traps, like the BG-Sentinel and Mosquitaire trap. In their independent contract research laboratory, Biogents evaluates products which keep mosquitoes at bay, like skin repellents, impregnated textiles, repellent evaporators and contact insecticides.

Paint against Dengue mosquitoes

Our first project is funded by an Innovation Grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and will focus on developing an effective control product against Dengue mosquitoes. During a 12-month R&D project we will combine known Aedine mosquito attractants with novel mosquito control agents, for which we will develop a long-lasting coating application in collaboration with two industrial partners.
